Which Lineage 2 core should you run?

Lineage 2 · 17 September 2026 · 2 min read

L2J, Mobius, aCis and the independent rewrites compared - what each targets, and where the real work actually is.

Running a Lineage 2 server means picking a core first, and that choice decides what chronicle you can offer, how much work the datapack needs, and whether anyone will still be maintaining it in two years.

The cores worth knowing

Every project below was checked against its actual home rather than copied from a forum post. Where a link is missing, it is because no canonical repository could be confirmed - not because the project does not exist.

Project Notes
L2J Java, the core most forks descend from
L2J Mobius Java, Interlude through to Essence
aCis Java, Interlude-focused
L2J Sunrise Java, L2J fork with server packs
l2auth C, an independent rewrite from scratch
NodeL2 JavaScript, independent implementation
L2dotNET C#, no commits since 2018

Which one for which chronicle

Interlude is where most of the community still is, and it is the best supported: L2J, aCis and Mobius all target it. If you want the largest pool of existing scripts and the most people who can help when something breaks, start there.

Classic and Essence narrow the field considerably. Mobius is the one that tracks the newer chronicles most closely.

If you are writing something rather than running something, l2auth and NodeL2 are independent implementations rather than L2J forks, which makes them far easier to read.

What actually costs you time

The core is a weekend. The datapack is the year.

  • Geodata decides whether mobs walk through walls. Budget real time here.
  • Rates and the economy are the whole design of your server. Copying another server's config copies its problems.
  • Custom content is where forks diverge and where merging upstream fixes stops being possible. Every change you make is a change you now maintain.

Before you open

Get the server reachable and the wipe policy written down before you advertise. Players forgive bugs; they do not forgive an unannounced wipe.

Listing here is worth doing on day one: votes reset on the 1st of every month, so a server that opens today competes with everyone else from zero rather than against years of accumulated votes.

Lineage 2 servers are ranked here monthly, and the counter resets on the 1st — a server that opens today can still reach the top.
